How to Read Open Score: Canons and Fugues Workshop

Reading choral music laid out in open score is an acquired skill. It is one thing to learn how to read music laid out traditionally, with each hand taking a separate stave.

It is quite another to look at four different staves and make decisions about which hand plays what.

Add another level of difficulty - voices moving in canon or fugue - and reading all four parts becomes near impossible.

Professional Development Designed Especially for You!

This is why I created the How To Read Open Score Workshop: Canons and Fugues. I want to share with you secrets of the trade that I have learned in over 30 years of choral accompanying, things that have helped me to work more efficiently and better serve the choirs I have played for.

If you currently play for a choir, you are already familiar with music laid out in open score. You may even be comfortable reading four parts at a time…if they are moving together.

But what is an accompanist to do when each voice part has a mind of its own?

Let me suggest that it has less to do with your ability to play and more to do with your ability to quickly scan and prioritize what to play.

Open Score Workshop

It was a GREAT workshop, well planned/paced, solid information, great examples, and taught in such a way that pianists of different experience/abilities could all benefit. Thanks again!- Scott
