How to Approach Open Score
Reading choral music laid out in open score is an acquired skill. It is one thing to learn how to read music laid out traditionally, with each hand taking a separate stave.
It is quite another to look at four different staves and make decisions about which hand plays what.
If you’ve ever opened a choral score and thought, “Where do I even start?”—you’re not alone. Most of us didn’t train specifically for this. We learned on the job, often without clear tools or guidance.
This workshop is here to change that.
If you currently play for a choir, you have the skills to read open score. You are a capable pianist who can read intermediate- to advanced-level music and you have foundational knowledge of music theory and technique.
What You’ll Learn
During our three days together, you’ll discover how to:
- Analyze harmonies and read voice parts in various combinations
- Triage a score
- Prioritize what to play (and what to leave out)
- Read SATB vocal parts in homophonic and polyphonic textures
- Navigate multiple entrances and make sense of dense passages
- Tackle melismas and voice crossings
You explain the priorities of an accompanist so clearly, and it was helpful to have a guide to reading open score for the first time. - Sophie
